- B-1 DISTRICT BASKETBALL: Waverly Edges Beatrice For State Tourney Berth
By Jeff Motz
Consider Mark Watton playing the role of Norman Dale in the famed true-story movie "Hoosiers" and his Waverly boys basketball team would be the "Hickory Huskers."
The first year head coach, who came out of retirement to coach the Vikings this season, guided them to the B-1 district championship game Tuesday night inside the Prasch Center at Lincoln Southeast, just a step away from achieving their season-long goal.
Waverly battled to a 46-39 victory over Beatrice to capture the district title and earn a spot in next week's NSAA Class B boys state basketball tournament. It didn't come easy for the Vikings.
Dylan Janecek scored on a layup to give Waverly (18-7) a 33-22 lead to start the fourth quarter. Beatrice (13-10) responded with back to back threes from Hunter Zarybnicky and Ty Bardsley.
Then Brandon Janssen scored underneath the basket to extend the Waverly lead to 35-28 with 5:36 left to play. But Zarbynicky hit another three and Bardsley scored on a fastbreak to cut Beatrice's deficit to 35-33 with 4:42 remaining.
Jorgensen then scored on the next Waverly possesion and Erik Evans converted on a three-point play that put the Vikings ahead 40-33 with 2:45 in the game.
Beatrice got back to within six with 2:15 left when Rylee Zimmerman hit a three-pointer. Then Jorgensen converted on a three-point play and Janssen hit free throws in the stretch to help Waverly finish the game.
It was much different in the first half. Playing into the slower tempo from Beatrice, Waverly led 7-3 after one before taking a 21-15 halftime lead.
Janssen led the Vikings with 16 points, while Evans added 12 and Jorgensen finished with 10 points.
Bardsley led Beatrice with 14 points.
