02/01/2013 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Williams Three Lifts Southwest Past Northeast

By Jeff Motz

Reid Williams has known to be clutch from three-point range in past games.

Friday night was no different, as the 6-4 Lincoln Southwest senior hit a three-pointer with eight seconds left to cap off a 14-point rally and give the No. 9 Silver Hawks a 46-44 victory over Lincoln Northeast on Hall of Fame night at the Ed Johnson Gym.

Williams' three-pointer led to a Northeast time out.  The Rockets (6-13) had one final look for a shot, but Derrick Curtis' three-pointer bounced off the rim a couple of times, before not falling as the buzzer sounded.

Northeast had bounced back in the third quarter, leading 37-32.  Tyler Sorensen hit a three and Ryan Garver scored a layup to make it 42-32 with 7:02 left to play.  Southwest's defense began to take over and a full-court press created problems for Northeast on offense.

The Silver Hawks (12-7) began the 14-2 rally off a Williams three-pointer with 6:48 left.  Down the stretch, Southwest converted on six free throws, including two from Gunnar Peterson that closed the deficit to 42-41.

Then Garver countered for Northeast, driving the lane and faking a pass before scoring on a layup to make it 44-41 with 2:42 left.  Southwest stalled before Easton Edmund scored on a layup with 1:38 to go to make it 44-43.

After the Rockets missed two layups on the same possession and failing to hit the front end of a one-and-one, the Silver Hawks got the ball and set up for Williams' game-winning three pointer.

Peterson added eight points and 11 rebounds, while Edmund added seven points for Southwest.

Northeast was led by Connor Springman and Spencer Kirk, who each scored 10 points.  The Rockets were tied with Southwest at 13 apiece after the first quarter and trailed 24-21 at halftime before starting the second half on a 21-8 run.
