01/17/2013 - BOYS BASKETBALL: Three-Point Play Helps Northeast Edge Lincoln High

By Jeff Motz

Dalton Hegeholz took matters into his own hands Thursday night.

The 5-11 junior guard converted on a three-point play with 7.3 seconds left and helped Lincoln Northeast to a 44-43 victory over Lincoln High in front of a reporter estimated crowd of 1,000 at the Ed Johnson Gym.

Leading up to the play, Lincoln High converted on a the front end of a one-and-one free throw from Jason Towery. Northeast turned the ball over and KaShawn Wilson was fouled with 19.5 seconds left.  Wilson hit the front-end of the bonus to make it 43-41 Links, but missed the second attempt.

The Rockets got the ball and Hegeholz dribbled in the lane, shot faked and made the basket as he was fouled by D'Marquieyon Whittington.  Hegeholz hit the free throw and a last second desperation shot from Lincoln High's Peyton Helmstadter bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

Northeast (5-9) led 34-29 heading into the fourth quarter, before the Links went on an 8-4 run.  Helmstader hit two free throws for Lincoln High, then the Rockets countered with a Hegeholz free-throw.

The Links regained the lead after Helmstadter hit a left-base line jumper with 2:10 left to give the Links a 41-39 lead.  Northeast then tied it at 41 on a basket in the lane from Tyler Sorensen with 1:50 to play, which set up the final minute.

Khaleefa Muhammad was part of the Lincoln High comeback, scoring eight of his game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter.

The Links (3-11) led 14-12 after the first quarter, and Tyler Keller's two big, second half three-pointers made it 21-16 Northeast.

The Rockets countered with a 1-3-1 zone for much of the game, forcing Lincoln High to consider shooting from outside.  Muhammad answered with two three-pointers in the fourth quarter that helped the Links to keep within reaching distance.

Connor Springman led Northeast with 14 points and Hegeholz added 12 points.
