By Jeff Motz
FREMONT---Kiefer Musiel isn't bashful of taking an outside shot. The 6-4 Lincoln North Star senior proved that by hitting four three-pointers and scoring 22 points in leading the Navigators to a 67-55 win over Grand Island to capture the Heartland Athletic Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday at Fremont's Al Bahe Gymnasium.
North Star sprinted out to a 9-3 lead with 3:37 left in the first quarter after a Noah Housh dunk. But Grand Island rallied behing Sam Foltz' three-point shooting and a pair of baskets from Nick Wenz and Ryker Fyfe for a 12-0 run to finish the quarter and start the second.
Musiel's hot shooting came in a pivotal second quarter, when he hit two threes to help spark a 17-6 Gator run. Senior guard Jon Dau scored eight of his 13 points during the run, including two threes that helped boost the North Star lead to 26-19 at halftime.
Grand Island wouldn't back away in the second half. After trailing 43-35 in the third quarter, the Islanders cut the deficit to 55-50 with 3:25 left after Fyfe and Spencer Wichert hit baskets during the stretch.
Musiel and Hudy Holt, who scored all of his 12 points in the second half, hit free throws down the stretch as part of a 12-5 run to seal the win.
Housh added 17 points to help the Gators. Fyfe led Grand Island with 18 points, while Foltz added 14 in the loss.
