By Jeff Motz
WAVERLY---Nigel Stephenson's three-point attempt at the end of regulation bounced off the back of the rim, but in overtime a six-point swing from the 5-10 Waverly guard sparked a 53-49 Viking win over Class B No. 4 Gretna Friday night.
Trailing 41-39 in the extra frame, Stephenson hit a go ahead three-pointer and converted on a three-point play on the next possession to give Waverly a 45-41 lead with 2:08 left. Gretna closed the gap to 45-43 with a 1:53 remaining off a layup from junior Mitch Drey.
After Waverly's Erik Evans missed a close-range shot, he committed a foul on Drey, who hit one of two free-throws trimming the Gretna deficit to 45-44. The Vikings pulled ahead 47-44 off of two Brandon Janssen free-throws with 1:23 to play. Janssen, Evans and Chris Zabel hit six free throws to seal the win.
Sam Tewes' basket for Waverly with under 40 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 39 to force overtime.
Janssen had a game-high 18 points for Waverly (3-2), while Evans finished with 11 and Stephenson added 10 for the Vikings.
Gretna led most of the game, going up 22-13 in the second quarter before Waverly went on a 7-1 run late to cut the Dragon lead to 23-20 at the half. Seniors Dan Glathar and Nate Hubert led Gretna (3-2) with 10 points apiece.
