Lincoln Pius X volleyball coach Jake Moore reached a coaching milestone over the weekend, collecting 600 wins as his Thunderbolts won the Pius X Invite against Elkhorn South. His father, Charlie Moore, the legendary boys basketball coach at Fairbury was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Sunday afternoon.
"It's a big weekend for my family, not because of anything I've done, but because of everything dad accomplished in his career. I certainly don't want this (his 600th coaching win) taking away from his recognition this weekend,'' Jake Moore was quoted as saying in an interview with the Lincoln Journal Star after Saturday's win. He's taken Pius X to 16 state tournaments and guided them to six state championships. Charlie Moore guided Fairbury to six state tournament appearances, three Class B state titles (1971, 1973 and 1978) and a runner-up finish in 1983.
Among the other inductees into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame is the 1986-87 Lincoln East girls basketball team that went undefeated and captured the Class A state championship. The Spartans were coached by John Strain and featured Melissa Sanford as the leading scorer, who went on to play one season at Nebraska on the Huskers' 1988 Big Eight Championship team. A familiar name to Nebraska Volleyball fans, Nikki Stricker, was on that same East team in '87. Stricker was a freshman on the title team. She helped the Spartans to three more state basketball tourney appearances and two state volleyball titles before graduating in 1990.
The East girls are being honored as the Hall of Fame's Silver Anniversary team.
