Depth perception wasn't a problem for Erich Nickman and Jared Kolbush at Pershing Center Saturday afternoon. Both Lincoln Pius X juniors connected on a combined eight three-pointers to lead the Thunderbolts to a 58-53 overtime win over defending Kansas state champion Kansas City Bishop Miege in the Nebraska Prep Classic Lincoln Shootout.
Nickman's 15 points all came from behind the arc, while Kolbush sank three trays that countered Miege's up-tempo game. After a quick 6-0 start by Miege to open up the third quarter, Pius X' center Ben Lewandowski scored to start a 20-2 run that gave the Thunderbolts a 44-37 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Miege's 6-5 senior center Curtis Okafor, who is receiving attention from Division I schools, hit a pair of free throws during an 8-0 run that was capped by a three from guard Montel Cozart to tie the game at 49 a piece setting up overtime.
In the overtime period, Pius X scored off the tip when Kolbush to start the extra frame for a 51-49 advantage. Lewandowski hit a couple of free throws late in overtime to seal the win.
Pius led 18-15 after one and trailed 29-24 at halftime.
Nickman and Kolbush each scored 15 points, while Lewandowski added points. Okafor led Miege with 21 points.
