OMAHA------The Sterling Jets got a taste of Metro basketball Saturday night. Omaha Roncalli came out strong in the second half against the Jets and used a 26-13 point swing in the third quarter while on their way to a 76-68 win in the Nebraska Prep Classic at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
Gayland Drake and Tyler Alitz were the one-two punch behind the Crimson Pride. Using dribble penetration, Drake attacked the basket, then would dish off or score while on his way to scoring 29 points.
Sterling led 21-19 after one and 34-31 at halftime. Alitz, who finished with 21 points, started the second half by converting on a three point play for Roncalli.
After a Steve Mucha basket, Sterling tied the game up at 36 off a basket from John Parrish. Roncalli took the lead for good after Alitz hit a three and Mucha scored off a steal for a 41-36 lead. The Crimson Pride led 57-47 after three and had a lead as big as 66-52 in the fourth quarter. Roncalli's full-court pressure at times held Sterling at bay.
Connor Malone, who scored a game-high 30 points, had 16 points in the first half for Sterling (1-1). Malone hit two threes and sank four three throws in the game, while converting on close range shots. Parrish and Kody Benson were the next high scorers with six points a piece.
