Trevor Johnson and Jack Burt weighed in heavily as difference makers for Lincoln Pius X Friday night. Both combine to score 41 points and led the Thunderbolts through a third quarter spurt on their way to a 71-54 win over Lincoln Northeast at the Ed Johnson Gym.
Johnson scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half, starting with the first three possessions of the second half, after taking their first lead of the game on a baseline buzzer beater from Joey Werning for a 30-29 halftime lead.
While Johnson's inside game dominated, the perimeter game was strong, too. Burt, Werning and Dustin Oberembt hit consecutive three-pointers to open up a 45-36 lead in the third quarter. Werning added 14 points in the Pius X win, while Oberembt finished with 10 points.
Pius X (11-2) had Northeast (4-11) on the ropes in the fourth quarter, able to break the Rocket diamond and one defense and capitalizing on their miscues.
Northeast, however, started the first half strong. Using a physical presence, the Rockets jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the first quarter. Sophomore Jordan Schroer scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half and connected on four three-pointers in the game.
Derek Hoodjer added 13 points in the Rocket loss, while Puot Kudhot finished with 11 points.
