FIRTH---When in a jam, Norris boys basketball coach Curt Carlson now knows he can rely on five players to sink key free-throws to seal a win. That's what the Titans did by outscoring Waverly 9-3 in the final 3:39 of the game to win 48-40 over the Vikings in front of an estimated 1,500 at the Norris Middle School Gym Friday night.
Waverly's Tyler Evans knocked the ball away from two Norris players and scored on a breakaway layup to tie the game at 37 with 3:39 in the game. Norris guard Tyler Kvasnicka drew a foul while driving to the basket and hit two free-throws to give Norris a 39-37 lead. After a Waverly turnover, Ben Kruger was fouled and hit one of two free-throws for a 40-37 Norris lead.
The Vikings tried to tie when senior guard Tyler Evans missed a three and Kruger hit two free-throws for a 42-37 Norris advantage with 40 seconds left.
Zach Tebo each hit free-throws for a 46-37 lead, before Waverly guard Nigel Stephenson hit a three-pointer pull the Vikings to within six with 30 seconds left. Jared Zysset sealed the game with two free-throws with nine seconds remaining.
Norris jumped out to a 17-11 lead after the first quarter, but Waverly roared back on an 8-0 run sparked by Evans before the Vikings capped off the half with a 23-21 lead.
TeKolste led Norris with 17 points and Tebo added 13 points in the Titan victory. Evans led Waverly with 17 points and Stephenson finished with with 10 points for the Vikings.
