12/09/2009 - Bates named new executive director of Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame

YORK -- The Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Foundation Board of Directors unanimously approved the appointment of Randy Bates of Lincoln as the Hall's new executive director.

Bates, who retired in May as the activities director at Norris High School, will assume his duties on March 1, taking over for Dick Beechner of Kearney, who has resigned. Beechner served as the foundation's executive director seven years.

Bates has been a teacher, coach and administrator for the past 39 years in Pennsylvania, Iowa and Nebraska. He said he's excited about helping the Hall of Fame reach its goal of establishing a permanent home for the Hall in the Nebraska School Activities Association's office building in Lincoln.

"One of the biggest values I see to any hall of fame ... is inspirng kids for the future," Bates said. "They look at things. They see the pictures. They read the inscriptions and, hopefully will hear and see it when we get the thing up and running. Maybe they'll set a goal for who they want to be. There's not enough role models and heroes in our society any more for them to look up to."

A graduate of Wayne State, Bates was the athletic director at Lincoln East from 1989 to 1997, and at Norris from 2000 to his retirement this year.

He said he decided to become involved with the Hall of Fame because, "I need a challenge every day. You can only fish so much. ... I need some place to get up and go to. I need to get out and meet people. That's kind of who I am."
Along that line, Bates said one if his first tasks will be to raise the Hall of Fame's visibility.

"Everybody I see needs to know I'm associated with the Hall of Fame and needs to hear it face to face," Bates said.
