03/10/2009 - From the Press Box: Surprises at Girls State Basketball Tourney

Jeff Motz

No matter who you talked to Saturday afternoon, the shock of Lincoln Southeast getting beat for the Class A Girls State Basketball title by Bellevue West was the talk of the town.  Southeast, 26-1, was on target to win their second straight state title and 10th in school history.  But they fell victim to the inside play of Bellevue West Emily Hauder and Alexis Akin-Otiko, plus their outside shooting was off target.

Had they won the state title, they arguably would have been considered the best team in school history.  Now, it's time to move on and let this fade into the past.

Congratulations to the Thunderbirds for winning their second state title in three years.

Congratulations to all of the Southeast seniors, who helped contribute to the long standing success John Larsen's program that might be going through a bit of a rebuilding process next season.  Ten of the 12 players that suited up for the state tournament are seniors.  Only Paige Nielsen and Haley Lake return.

Seward's first girls Class B state basketball title started what could be the next two years of dominance.  Creighton recruit Alyssa Kamphaus, forward Emily Cady return along with three other returning starters for what could possibly be another dominate season.

Get Well Wishes

Last week, you heard us tell you that Lincoln Pius X girls basketball coach Bill Rice's father, Dick Rice, was recovering from heart bypass surgery.  Jim Rice, Bill's brother, called my office phone Friday afternoon wanting us to send out the wish during the game and we hoped he enjoyed listening to the webcasts.  Unfortunately, it didn't go Pius X's way in the end, but nonetheless it was an exciting run.

From all of us here at Lincoln Prep, here's to a speedy recovery.

Boys State Tourney just around the corner

Starting Thursday morning, you can hear four of the six games we'll carry LIVE and the remaining two on tape-delay.  The tape-delayed broadcasts feature Bellevue West vs. Lincoln Southwest and Omaha Bryan vs. Lincoln East.

It's become cliche, but it's so true.  Class A is virtually wide open.  Don't be too surprised to see four Lincoln teams in the semi-finals.  I do think that at least one Lincoln team will play for the state championship.  Who that team will be.....well......we'll just have to see how things play out.

In all honesty, I think any of the eight teams in Class A stand a very good chance of winning the whole thing.  Norfolk is my darkhorse to win.  I'll just leave it at that.
