Crete----For the first time in eight years, the Sterling boys basketball team will be dancing in Lincoln.
The Jets (20-4) capped off their best season since 2001 by winning the D2 District 1 title with a 45-33 win over Hampton Tuesday night at Crete High School. The district title means Sterling will be the No. 1 seed in the Class D-2 boys state basketball tournament and play in the 9am opening round game. Hampton will likely be a 3 team at a state.
The turning point of the game came in the 3rd quarter.
After a close game through the first half, Sterling managed over a come a lead change halfway through the third quarter. Leading 22-20 with under a minute left in the 3rd quarter, guard Jake Wirthele hit a key three that gave them a five-point lead, that was part of a 10-0 run heading into the 4th quarter.
Kyle Lowmack, Zach Lempka and Jese Salberg and Jake Wirthele all helped in the scoring run. After a free-throw from Austin Peters, Hampton tried to push their way back into the game. But it seemed like that every time the Hawks would do that, Sterling would answer back with a steal and a break away for a basket.
In the first quarter, Sterling led 4-3 and extended their lead to 14-12 at halftime, while Hampton relied on Dewayne Wall who scored eight of his 10 points in the half. Wirthele scored 10 points to lead the Jets, while Lempka added only 9 points and Kyle Lowmack finished with 8 points.
