Lincoln-----Kurt Farmer may have lit up the scoreboard for Columbus, but it took a double-digit effort from Drew Sankey, Luke Matzke and Jordan Yurth to help the Lincoln East boys basketball team to a 63-56 win over the Discoverers Friday night.
Sankey and Matzke helped East on a 16-9 run after the first quarter. Sankey, a 6-5 senior, first scored off a one-handed dunk to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
While Farmer continued to launch threes and used the dribble penetration to keep Columbus within striking distance, East got a boost from senior forward Mitch Ham in the 2nd quarter. Ham scored seven points in a pivotal 2nd quarter that saw the Spartans take a 32-21 lead.
East stretched the lead to 48-32 after the 3rd quarter. Columbus started chipping away, mostly in part to Farmer and 6-4 senior center Brian Cleary, by getting to a close as 50-45.
East led 61-54, while Sankey and Yurth hit a few three-throws to help seal the deal. Matzke led the Spartans with 16 points, while Sankey and Yurth each had 14 points. Farmer led all scorers with 25 points for 5-15 Columbus, while teammate Cleary finished with 15 points.
East (15-5) will host Omaha Burke Saturday at 7pm.
