Omaha-----Caleb Steffensmeier has taken it upon himself to be guy Omaha Creighton Prep relies on from the outside. The 6-0 junior guard hit three three-pointers to help boost the No. 5 Junior Jays to a 58-38 win over Lincoln North Star at Prep's Birdcage Saturday night.
It marked the seventh win in eight games for Prep (14-4) and the 100th career win for head coach Josh Luedtke. Steffensmeier hit his first three during a 14-8 1st quarter run for the Junior Jays. Senior Alex Hook scored the first six points of the game for Prep and Brett Potter added another basket for an early 8-0 run.
North Star (7-9) was cold from outside, but broke the ice on a Zach Ziemba three-pointer to get on the scoreboard. Navigator center Amilio Boone scored the next two North Star baskets that cut the lead down to 11-7 late in the quarter.
Prep extended their lead on a run from Steffensmeier, Taylor Stormberg and Cole Martin that helped them to a 30-16 halftime lead.
North Star had a good third quarter offensively. Outside shots from Ziemba and Kiefer Musiel were falling and the Gators cut down the lead to 39-30 lead before Steffensmeier hit another three to give Prep a 42-30 just before the end of the 3rd quarter buzzer.
Hook finished with eight points, while Potter added seven points in the win. Boone led North Star with 10 points, all of those coming in the first half.
