01/15/2009 - From the Press Box: Ralston is the real deal

Jeff Motz
Webmaster/Announcer

Waverly----It was pretty evident Tuesday night that Ralston is the best team in Nebraska boys high school basketball.  The Rams (Class B #1 and 9-1 overall) came in to Waverly's gym and utililzed their transition game that helped them secure an 82-65 win over the #4 Vikings.

Greg Smith proved why he's perhaps the state's top player.  The Colorado State recruit scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Waverly, while his younger brother, Dwight, chipped in 15 points for Ralston.  Andy Smolinski, a quick 5-7 point guard, wasn't afraid to attack the basket.  He scored 12 points in a game the entire Ralston bench contributed in one faction or another.

The only other team of similar caliber they'll have to beat is undefeated and 2nd ranked Beatrice.  That matchup could happen at the upcoming River Cities Conference tournament.

Based on what I saw, I would say Ralston could easily compete with and beat teams like Omaha Benson, Creighton Prep, and Bellevue East.  They might have a tough time with Omaha Central and Omaha Bryan, but wouldn't be surprised if they could beat them.  Just think if Ralston would have stayed up in Class A and played more of the Metro teams.

Lincoln teams stay tough over the weekend

Class A #1 ranked Lincoln Southwest stayed tough over the weekend in the Basketball Blizzard beating Papillion-LaVista South in OT and Omaha Westside by four.
