01/06/2009 - Sterling hangs on, beats Johnson-Brock

Sterling---There's a target on the Sterling boys basketball team nowadays.  The Class D-2 4th-ranked Jets had to hit some free-throws late in the game against Johnson-Brock Tuesday night to hold on for a 55-50 win.

The Jets led 52-47 late in the 4th quarter, when Cody Baack hit a three to pull the Eagles to within two.  Devin Heusman hit on 2 of 4 free-throws and Jake Wirthlele added another within the final minute of the game to help seal the win for Sterling (8-0).

Sterling got off to a quick 7-0 start early in the 1st quarter and survived a late 1st quarter rally from Johnson-Brock, leading 15-12.  It stayed pretty close through the 2nd quarter, with the Jets leading 26-23 at halftime.

Zach Lempka, who finished with 18 points before fouling out, helped spark Sterling in the 2nd half.  A three point play from Lempka early on in the 3rd quarter put the Jets up 29-25.  Johnson-Brock held their only lead of the game halfway through the 3rd quarter, when Baack hit a free throw to give the Eagles a 36-35 lead.  Then Jese Salberg converted on a three-point play on the next possession to put the Jets ahead.

Salberg chipped in 10 points for Sterling, while Hans Christensen led Johnson-Brock with 13 points.

Johnson-Brock 41, Sterling 28

Sterling started out the game on an 8-1 run before Johnson-Brock took off on a 13-1 to end the 1st quarter and start the 2nd quarter.  The Eagles never looked back only allowed 10 points in the 2nd half.  Jordan Broady led Johnson-Brock with 19 points, while Courtney Van Gronigen led Sterling with 12 points.
