12/26/2008 - From the Press Box: Heartland Conference Tourney should be action packed!

Jeff Motz
Webmaster/Announcer

For the first time in about three years, the Heartland Athletic Conference Boys Basketball Tournament should be filled with excitement.  And there are plenty of reasons.

Four of the eight teams are pre-season ranked in Class A, one unranked team remains undefeated, and it could determine who the number one team is in the state.

Lincoln North Star is the hottest team in the capital city at 5-0 and it's likely they could face Lincoln Southeast (5-1) in the HAC championship New Year's Eve.  While that may be a highly anticipated match up, don't count out Lincoln High, Lincoln Southwest or Lincoln East in trying to make it through the winner's bracket.  Despite dropping a tough home loss to Norfolk December 20th, traditional basketball power Lincoln Northeast could even make a little noise.

That's why this tournament should be pretty exciting to watch.  You can hear all of the winner's bracket games on Lincoln Prep Sports.com starting Monday, December 29th.  We'll also update you on games on the girls side of the HAC tourney.

Around Class A

More bad news for Omaha Creighton Prep.  The Junior Jays will be without 6-9 senior center and UNO recruit John Karhoff for the rest of the year.  Sources close to Lincoln Prep Sports.com say that Karhoff was doing a light workout when he hurt his knee again.  Karhoff hurt the same knee toward the end of the summer basketball season.  Senior guard Alex Hook had his knee scoped recently, after hurting it again in the football playoffs.  He's expected to be back in about three weeks for Prep.

Omaha Central continues to be undefeated in this young basketball season.  The Eagles have won the last three state basketball titles and still could be in contention for a run this year.
