Beatrice---You can call it revenge, but the Sterling Boys Basketball team might call it game that was very crucial for them to get some recognition in the high school basketbal rankings. The Jets (8-4) capitalized early on Johnson-Brock and had to keep fending them off through the game, en route to a 47-35 win to clinch the MUDECAS Class B division championship Saturday night at the Beatrice City Auditorium.
The win marks the first MUDECAS championship in any division for Sterling since 1994.
Senior D.J. Thiel got hot early for Sterling, scoring 6 of his 14 points in the first quarter to help the Jets to a 13-9 lead over the Eagles. Johnson-Brock picked up a little steam defensively and scored some key baskets, including a steal for a breakaway layup from Tyler Durant-Allen and a bunny from Jimmie Bunting at the buzzer to cut the Jets lead to 21-19 at halftime.
Sterling looked much different in the 3rd quarter, especially late. Sophomore Zach Lempka hit a couple of key shots and free throws and good defense from Thiel, Brandon Nieveen and Jake Saathoff put the Jets up nine, 34-25 after three quarters.
The Jets extended their lead to as much as 13 in the 4th quarter and never really looked back. Lempka led all scorers with 15 points, while Thiel added 14 points in the Sterling win. Tyler Bohling scored 8 of his 14 points in the 1st half to lead Johnson-Brock. The win and championship avenges a 55-50 loss the Jets suffered to the Eagles on December 18th.
It's a full week off of action for Sterling, before the hit the floor at home next Saturday night to play host to C-2 power Nebraska City Lourdes, a game you can hear on Lincoln Prep Sports.com.
