Lincoln---Ever heard of the saying "it could have been worse"? That's what was being said among fans at Bishop Flavin Gym at Lincoln Pius X Friday night, as the Thunderbolt boys beat Lexington 69-39 and the Pius girls won 56-35.
The Boys game was out of reach from the start, as Pius X jumped out to a 9-0 run before Lexington scored their first basket. Joe Pleskac was hot behind the 3-point arc for Pius, nailing four three's in the first half and helping spark another 9-0 run to finish out the half, as the Thunderbolts led 35-23 at halftime.
It didn't get any better for Lexington in the 2nd half, as Pius took advantage of every turnover and made them into points en route to a 50-32 lead after three. Pius center KC Hyland scored all of his 8 points in the second half, while the 'Bolts relied on their reserves to carry them out the rest of way. All the Pius players scored in the game, led by Pleskac with 19 points and Jack Burt chipped in 14 points, as Class B 7th-ranked Pius improves to 5-4.
Lexington (2-6) was led by Stuart Long and Matt Cunningham, who each scored 8 points to pace the Minutemen.T
The girls game had a little bit of a different flavor to it early on. Lexington jumped ahead of the undefeated 'Bolts 11-6 in the 1st quarter, before Pius went on a 6-0 run to finish the quarter and take a 12-11 lead. Pius jumped ahead 20-11 in the 2nd quarter, behind Alex Grant, Mollie Lacy and Jordan Searcey, but the Minutemaids quickly closed the gap to three off a 6-0 run of their own behind Hannah Mandelko and Terah Maloley.
The Thunderbolts turned the tables late in the 2nd quarter with a 6-0 run to lead 26-17 at halftime.
In the 2nd half, Pius started to distance themselves from Lexington, leading 39-25 after three before the 56-35 final score. Grant led Pius (7-0) with 19 points, while Natalie Braun added 11 points and Searcey finished with 10 points in the win. Mandelko led Lexington (5-4) with 12 points in the loss.
