01/01/2008 - From the Press Box: Outlook for the rest of the HS Basketball Season

Jeff Motz
Webmaster/Announcer

Okay, we're barely into 2008 and I have decided to post who I THINK could be playing for basketball championships in March.

I do think there will be at least one or two Lincoln boys teams in the Class A tourney and maybe two from the Lincoln area in Class B. Class A girls the same thing, but one for the Class B. This is solely based on who's playing well right now.

In Class A:

Lincoln High and Southeast will be the capital city representatives in the boys tourney. But honestly, it will be Omaha Central vs. Bellevue West III for the title, as Josh Jones and Antoine Young play against each other one last time before they become teammates next year at Creighton. But if there had to be a team to be an upset special and play for a state title, it would be Omaha Creighton Prep.

Class B: Beatrice vs. Hastings Adams Central for the state championship.  Holdrege could be there, too.  Waverly and Norris stand good chances to be at the tourney and Lincoln Pius X could be there, but there can only be a maximum of two wild cards for the tourney and they could come from the B-1 district with those teams.  Watch out for Omaha Gross and Omaha Skutt.

Girls

Class A:  Lincoln Southeast vs. Millard North for the state title.  This will be a matchup of two teams who are familiar with each other.  Both teams have players that play on the summer all-star teams from the Cornhusker Shooting Stars.  Bellevue East, Millard South and Millard West could be playing for a title as well.

Class B:

Lincoln Pius X vs. Crete.......this could be a title game for the ages, especially with the entire Class B field loaded with talented teams.  Pius is playing great basketball and Crete is looking to do what they did last year, but come out with a State Championship.

So, if you think I'm crazy with my picks or agree with all of them, email me at lincolnprepsports@yahoo.com or simply sign the guest book on the left side of the webpage.

Here are some comments from parents and some of you fans about the website in recent weeks:

I've been meaning to write you an email for a while and I have to tell you, this is a nice website for the city schools. Thanks for what you do. Maybe you can round up sponsors to get you hooked up for video webcasts. That would be neat. Thanks to you and your sponsors for recognizing the Lincoln schools.

You have know idea what a great idea this is for the working people. I drive truck and have a laptop, I stop and can listen to my son D J THIEL play and it makes a difference to all of us. Keep up the good work Jeff.   GO JETS

Don Thiel, Sterling

Let's set the record straight...you'll see that Lincoln Prep Sports.com is catering to the city schools first and the others second. It's great to see that you're covering other smaller schools, including Sterling. I love LPSports coverage of Lincoln area teams, especially if they're not on anywhere else. Thanks for what you do for Lincoln and around SE Nebraska.

It's nice to see sterling getting some coverage and recognition for their hard work and abilities.  I wish to invite everyone to come out and see the improvements these young athletes have accomplished so far in this early part of the season.  New coach, new look, exciting things happening. Come support your Jets. Also love the site.

Steve Lempka, Sterling.
