Lincoln---Intensity proved to be on the side of the Lincoln East boys basketball team Friday evening. The Spartans (3-4), down by as much as eight through the course of the game, bounced back in the 4th quarter to beat Lincoln Pius X 48-42 in the consolation game of the Lincoln High basketball tourney at Earl Johnson Gym.
Aside from the pressure defense, East took advantage of their height in the lane, going to 6-7 postman Garth Hamilton quite a bit, scoring 12 of his 16 points in the second half. Hamilton got some help from 6-5 junior Reece Schwartz, who game off the bench to score eight of his 13 points in the first half.
The game was close in the 4th quarter, when East's Dan Dahl scored on a breakaway layup to give the Spartans a 36-35 lead with just under 5:00 left. Then Pius X's Cole Kennett scored 2 of his ten points on the following possession after a rebound off a missed shot. Both East and Pius X would trade the lead for a few minutes, but the Spartans took the lead for good with 1:12 after Sam Witherby scored on a putback and Drew Sankey scored on the next possession to take a 45-42 lead. Hamilton hit another basket and Sankey hit a free throw to seal the win for East.
Pius X led most of the game. The Thunderbolts led 15-9 after one, 28-20 at halftime after going on a 7-0 run to end the first half, but the Spartans returned the favor by going on a 7-0 run in the first few minutes of the 3rd quarter, off baskets made by Hamilton and Schwartz. Schwartz scored five points off of two back-to-back steals to narrow the Pius lead down to 28-27. The Bolts finished the 3rd quarter up 33-27. Jack Burt led Pius X (3-2) with 13 points.
