Bruning----The term "opportunity knocks" certain rang true for the Sterling Jets boys basketball team Saturday night. Sterling used a press early on to take advantage of the ball game, but slipped a little in the 2nd half. But a short come back falls short in the end, as the Jets fell to Bruning-Davenport 38-35 in front of a near capacity crowd at the Storm Gym.
With under 2:00 left in the game, Sterling mounted a comeback by scoring two field goals and a free throw to close the gap to 36-35. Then Bruning-Davenport extended the lead to three, when center Brent Houchin hit a base line shot with about minute to go. The Jets have several opportunities within the final minute to tie the game up, but a three-point attempt from D.J. Thiel went long, sealing the win for the Storm.
Sterling got a big performance from 6-5 sophomore Zach Lempka, who finished with a game high 16 points, 10 of those coming in the 1st quarter, when the Jets led 12-7. The other two points came from guard Devin Heusman, who hit a bucket with time running out in the opening frame.
Bruning-Davenport outscored Sterling in the 2nd quarter 9-7, but the Jets held onto a 19-16 lead at halftime. The tables turned in the 3rd quarter, when the Storm came out to play aggressive defense and slapped on a full-court press, forcing some turnovers and capitalizing to take a 32-29 lead heading into the final period.
For the most part, it was an inside game. Only two three-pointers were made between both teams. Jake Saathoff added 8 points for the Jets in the loss. Garrett Hoins led Bruning-Davenport with 11 points, while Houchin added 8 points and forward Seth Williams scored 7 points.
