12/14/2007 - Waverly's Full-Court press too much for Ashland-Greenwood

Waverly----You can bet that Ashland-Greenwood head boys basketball coach Brad Jacobsen would like to forget about the full-court press he saw at Waverly High School Friday night. It was a full-court trapping press that doomed the Bluejays and helped the Vikings to a 68-31 win. In other words, a total blowout.

But it took a slow start for Waverly to respond. After Jon Henderson hit a three-pointer to put the Bluejays up 7-2 halfway through the 1st quarter, Waverly slapped on a press and went on a 10-0 run behind senior guard Andrew Palmer and sophomore guard Tyler Evans. After a Palmer made basket, Zach Hoy nailed a three to tie the game up and finished the quarter on a 16-3 run to go up 18-10.

The press proved to be too much for Ashland-Greenwood, as several turnovers allowed Waverly to capitalize. And taking the ball strong to the basket was key, too, including for Viking center Evan Kucera, who knocked down free-throws. Palmer hit a couple of threes and Evans continued his assault, by hitting key shots during a 22-7 run in the 2nd quarter to put Waverly up 40-17 at halftime and never looked back. It was 57-26 after three quarters.

Waverly (3-1) was led by Palmer with 18 points, while Evans added 13 for the Vikings. Both played about a minute of the fourth quarter before sitting to let the whole team get playing time and experience. Clint Pettit led Ashland-Greenwood (0-2) with 11 points.
