10/15/2007 - From the Press Box: East High playing great football, but other Lincoln teams will be fighting for their lives

Jeff Motz

Boy, does this weekend mean a lot to some Lincoln area football teams.  You can count on East and Southwest in the Class A playoffs, since both of them won three district games prior to their show down for the A-2 championship Saturday night.  The teams I'm concerned about are Northeast and North Star.

Both the Rockets and the Gators are in a situation to where they need to win out to get playoff berths.  Northeast needs a road win Columbus Monday night and then turn around four days later and pick up another road win at Norfolk, neither of which will be easy.  With very little recovery time, I would imagine the Rockets will be hurting a little, but don't count them out.

North Star needs to get a win over North Platte and vice versa.  Either way, one of these two teams will be calling it a season after Thursday night.  The Gators have come on strong as of late, with district wins over Southeast and Fremont.  This should be a game to keep an eye on this week.

In Class B, Waverly has clinched a playoff spot with their win over Nebraska City Friday night.  Now, the only thing they need to worry about is seeding.  That means if they can upset Crete this Friday and Beatrice next week that should make way for the Vikings to get a high-ranking seed in the playoff picture.

Norris, on the other hand, needs to win a couple of more times before they can get in the playoffs.  The Titans have looked impressive this season and could very well play a great game and squeek out a win against Pius X Friday night.  While the Thunderbolts have struggled, don't count them out against Norris, because it's not always easy for opposing teams to come out of Aldrich Field with a win.

Finally, and certainly not least, I want to congratulate the Lincoln Southwest Softball team for their finish at the State Softball Tournament this past week in Hastings.  The Silver Hawks finished as Class A runner-up with a 29-12 record to state champ Papillion-LaVista.  I can guarantee you this LSW softball team will be back and be just as tough next year as they were this year.  Hats off to the Lady Hawks on a job well done!!
